Book 2 Post 1
The second book that I will decide to read for this class is "What We Don't Talk About When We Talk About Fat" by Aubrey Gordon. The reason I was initially drawn to choosing this book is that my mom is a psychologist who specializes in helping people with eating disorders. From a very young age, I have been taught by my mother about the way society views people who are overweight and the struggles they deal with on a daily basis. They deal with a lot of mental abuse and as a society, we need to be less judgemental and more inclusive with the way treat people. I am really excited to compare notes and see what Aubrey Gordon has to say about this topic compared to what my mom has told me.
The other reason I chose this because is that I was born and raised in Los Angeles and I obviously attend the University of Southern California. These places are notorious for being overly health-conscious. As a result, people are very judgemental towards overweight people and I have overheard extremely derogatory comments made my whole life. There are a lot of misconceptions about overweight people and I am sure this book clears a lot of them up. I am really excited that I and many people in the class are reading this book so that our society can be a much more inclusive place in the future.
