World We Imagine Part 3

FOR INSPIRATION AND RECOGNITION OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (FIRST) Intro: As a Mechanical Engineering major at USC, I really wanted to use my gifts to give back to the surrounding community. My freshman year, I joined a joined an organization at USC called SCout in which students go to local underprivileged elementary schools surrounding USC and host science lessons and lab experiments to spark an interest in STEM for the students. After being involved in this club and witnessing the impact this had on the youth firsthand, I think supporting organizations that do this work on a global scale would revolutionize the world. That is why I am pitching the nonprofit company FIRST. For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, or FIRST, is, "the world's leading youth-serving nonprofit for STEM education." In order to make the world a better place, people of all ethnicities and backgrounds need to have access to education in order to get a college education and a good...

World We Imagine Part 1

This quote means to me that in order make the world a better place, everyone needs to be thriving. Everyone does not just include our country, but it includes the entire globe. This is because we are all living on this Earth and sharing this unique human experience together, and it is therefore our obligation globally to keep the planet and its occupants in good condition. One way we can make the world a better place is by changing our social media habits. In my opinion, social media is an extremely toxic platform that has created a lot of mental health problems for this generation. It is extremely easy to bully and make fun of others online because people are willing to say more hurtful comments when they know they do not have to physically say it to someone’s face. Also, social media has created unrealistic living standards. Many people make their lives online appear much more fun and glamorous than what they are to seem cool and get approval from others. In return, people start to...

If you thought I was sick and tired about writing about basketball then you should guess again. This week the Milwaukee Bucks took down the Phoenix Suns to win the 2021 NBA Finals after overcoming a 2-0 series deficit......and I'm already over it lets talk about a real team. Today I am going to talk about the Lakers offseason (I am heavily considering applying to write for the Lakers after this class I really love it). Lets review some of the top trending rumors and I will give my thoughts on them and let you know if I approve of them. One of the top trending offseason rumors in all of basketball is that Chris Paul and Carmelo Anthony will join the Lakers and the Banana Boat Squad will come together - if you do not know what the Banana Boat Squad is, Lebron James, Chris Paul, and Carmelo Anthony went on vacation together and were literally on a Banana Boat together. Overall I partially approve of this rumor. I would really like Chris Paul to come to the Lakers because of the way he...

Book 2 Post 2

For my second book of the summer semester, I had the privilege of reading "What We Don't Talk About When We Talk About Fat," by Aubrey Gordon. As I mentioned in my first Book 2 Post, my reasoning for choosing this book is that my mother is a psychologist who specializes in treating people with eating disorders. So, going into this book I have already been exposed by my mother to the adverse effects of extreme fat-shaming and what it can do to people physically and mentally. Therefore, books like these are very valuable for not just overweight people, but for everyone. Gordon's book specifically accomplishes a lot of important goals. It educates the readers from a medical standpoint about being overweight and breaks common myths about why overweight people are not lazy and cannot always just work out and simply lose weight. Next, Gordon gives some personal anecdotes of stories that give insight into some of the harassment she and others receive daily simply for being ...

Book 2 Post 1

The second book that I will decide to read for this class is "What We Don't Talk About When We Talk About Fat" by Aubrey Gordon. The reason I was initially drawn to choosing this book is that my mom is a psychologist who specializes in helping people with eating disorders. From a very young age, I have been taught by my mother about the way society views people who are overweight and the struggles they deal with on a daily basis. They deal with a lot of mental abuse and as a society, we need to be less judgemental and more inclusive with the way treat people. I am really excited to compare notes and see what Aubrey Gordon has to say about this topic compared to what my mom has told me. The other reason I chose this because is that I was born and raised in Los Angeles and I obviously attend the University of Southern California. These places are notorious for being overly health-conscious. As a result, people are very judgemental towards overweight people and I have overhe...

As the basketball playoffs are intensifying, I would like to give a breakdown of where the teams currently stand and what my predictions for the future will be. To recap, the Milwaukee Bucks and the Atlanta Hawks are playing in the Eastern Conference Finals and the Los Angeles Clippers and Phoenix Suns are playing in the Western Conference Finals. Last round, the Milwaukee Bucks defeated the Nets (the favorite to win the championship) in a gritty series that went all 7 games. The Atlanta Hawks, the lowest-seeded team remaining, stunned the 76ers by defeating them in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. The Milwaukee Bucks are the clear favorites up 2-1 in the series with 2-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, all-star Khris Middleton, and their new addition Jrue Holiday. However, you can never count out the Atlanta Hawks after the way they have been playing all playoffs. Coming into the season, the Hawks were not even expected to make the playoffs. They have talent, but most of their players ...
